RE: Introduce yourself...
@ Rachel Caton

Nice to meet you Rachel, i'm Patricia. I have writen a song in the past but do not have a band or anything like that sad. However, i am quite popular on my bus for being a great singer and often do some singing on the way home with everyone (or most of them (it's a double decker)) listening to me. It's not that scary, i've been on stage hundreds of times in the past.

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hi,
I'm a parent and think my daughter has Aspergers. From what I've read about it she fits the descriptions. I've always been slightly concerned about her (she's very socially and physically awkward, comes across as rude, has few friends, dislikes change, gets upset but can't explain why..). Since she started secondary school these traits have become more acute. She's now 14 and I'm really thankful that her school is so supportive of her as although she doesn't like the noise/crowds or change she is coping. She spends a lot of her break/lunch time at student support (which is safe for her) and has one to one support instead of music (which she couldn't cope with). Yesterday I asked her GP to refer her for a formal diagnoses so we'll see what happens. I came aspergernauts when searching for info about diagnoses. I've never joined a forum before!

Hello Poshell,

Welcome to your first forum. Keep coming back and making regular posts and become part of the community. I'm not a Aspie parent myself (although I know a couple who are) but there are many others like you wandering by here and hopefully you can find others with whom you can share/vent your frustrations with.

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hello All,
I'm Tref and i'm 47, married and living in London.
I am self diagnosed Aspie and trying to get a referral but at my age they just say things like "you've managed until now so why bother?" Main reason is because my 7 yr old son is also showing strong Aspie traits and we are wanting to get him formally diagnosed.
I have susspected that i was Aspie since i was in my 20's but in those days it was considered a childhood thing and adults didnt have it. Recently have taken various tests, quizes etc all of which i score highly on as Aspie. My wife says she is "not surprised" i think this is meant to be sarcastic.

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hi Tref,

Nice to have you on board. You are one up on me. I'd never even heard of AS until about ten years ago and then thought it was something that happened to someone else until someone pointed out I ticked a lot of boxes.

It's true, that at our advanced (ahem!) ages, there's not a lot that can be done. We've got this far in life with varying degrees of success so why bother the NHS now? Well, in my experience it helps to realise that all those bits of you that stick out in an NT world fit into a pattern. So at least you have a map of where the gotchas are and even some that you don't know about yet!

Don't necessarily expect your wife t change her attitude to you. Why should she? She's presumably lived with you for this long and has gotten used to your little ways and accepts you for what you are, not this strange Aspie that has suddenly appeared on your doorstep. Your son of course is a different matter and he should have the coping mechanisms put in place to help him steer a course in an NT world. The world can be a lonely place for an Aspie and, if diagnosed, your son needs to understand that he's not emotionally retarded, just sees the world differently.

Good luck.

Thanks wootlebug

I know my wifes attitude won't change, and i don't really want it to. we've got along for 15yrs so far without too many problems. She justs gives me space when i need it and support when i want. Smile

Other that that, this area is for general stuff that might be of interest, that maybe doesn't quite fit in the other places.

hello im julie and my son is 6 and was diagnosed with aspergers when he was 3 and a half. im 41 and have 3 older children aged 20 15 14 and a wee granddaughter who is 8 weeks old Smile

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hi Julie
That's a tough call. personally i like to know well in advance of any changes like that as i take a while to prepare for them. In my opinion i would tell him as soon as possible but be prepared for a reaction, next week for me is not enough time.
